What We're Watching

All the gift-related videos, movies, clips and skits that we've been watching.

  • Grace Hopper (60 Minutes). CBS News: New York, NY. August 24, 1986. Last accessed: March 8, 2018.

What we liked: It's what we're watching on International Women's Day - a recap of 60 Minutes' 1983 interview with Grace Hopper, broadcast the week after her retirement from the Navy in 1986. She was a pretty amazing lady - and one with a good sense of humor too. Check out the segment starting at 4:10 where she explains the difference between a nanosecond and a microsecond - we certainly found ourselves chuckling!

  • FedEx VS. UPS Dance Battle | The Williams Fam x David Moore x Josh Killacky. The Williams Fam: Suisun City, CA. May 9, 2017. Last accessed: December 22, 2017.

What we liked: We got a good chuckle out of this video - an imaginary look behind the scenes at package delivery in the States. We suspect it's a little bit more all-work-no-play (and probably no-dance) at the moment, but it's fun to imagine! Plus, pretty impressive dance skills from Jake Deanda, Alex Ditommaso, Josh Killacky and The Williams Fam, no?

  • The Christmas Candle. Saturday Night Live (Season: 42, Episode: 8). NBC: New York, NY, 2016.

What we liked: Every time we watch this video, we get a chuckle - satirizing as it does, Christmas music videos Eighties-style. What's more, it touches on two of our all-time bugbears: gifts that people don't like, and regifting. Click on through for a sure fire laugh!

  • Secret Santa. 30 Rock (Season: 4, Episode: 8). NBC: New York, NY, 2009.

What we liked: We were so bummed when '30 Rock' went off air - not only was it so consistently high-level funny, but Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy's friendship is among our all-time favorite TV friendships, possibly even claiming the top spot. Today is 'Black Friday' and we find ourselves thinking back to this moment in season 4, when Jack explains to Liz how, "gift giving is the purest expression of friendship."

  • Candy Corn (Unwrapped). Food Network: New York, NY. September 8, 2008. Last accessed: October 25, 2017.

What we liked: Halloween is just around the corner and we enjoyed learning a little bit about candy corn, a treat that's inextricably linked to our favorite spooky holiday! This short video offers a mini recap of the candy's history and a walk-through of how it's actually made.

  • Disaster Relief Donations That Don’t Bring Relief (CBS Sunday Morning). CBS: New York, NY. April 24, 2016. Last accessed: September 11, 2017.

What we liked: Our nation has just been hit by two devastating hurricanes. We're doing a lot of thinking about how we can help, about gifts that really matter. That brought us to Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI)'s website where we watched this real eye-opener of a video about why sending cash to a reputable charity, instead of physical goods, is almost always a faster and better way to help those affected.

  • The Present. Directed by Jacob Frey. 2014. FilmAkademie Baden-Württemberg: Ludwigsburg, Germany.

What we liked: a) A shout out for the people who give amazing gifts that are at first unappreciated - but that turn out to be life changing (in a good way). b) Spoiler alert: cuteness ahead. c) Likelihood of crying when you watch this: 110%.

  • Let's Talk About Gift Giving. LivingSocial: Washington, DC. December 17, 2015. Last accessed: August 9, 2017.

What we liked: All the feels! Even though this is an indirect advertisement, it made us grin and get a little lumpy-throated. As for the best gift of all time? We think 'my love' is a pretty awesome answer.

  • The Gift of Giving. MUIS Singapore: Singapore. June 19, 2016. Last accessed: August 9, 2017.

What we liked: 'I guess he likes making others smile,' is a pretty good summary of what's in it for gift givers. The story of Hakim is a sweet one and reminded us how small, daily gestures can add up to make a big difference in a neighborhood, family and/or community.
