Where did the name 'Little Birdie Me' come from?

When I was growing up, if one received a particularly lovely or thoughtful gift and asked, "how did you know?" The response was often, "a little birdie told me" - usually said with a twinkle in the eye. Truth be told, this generally meant another family member had tipped off the giver - but there seemed to be an unspoken agreement that it was more fun to maintain a sense of mystery and delight.

The Wiktionary definition of the phrase (at the moment I am writing this) captures this spirit perfectly: "this phrase is often used more comically than seriously, especially when the source of the information is obvious to both parties but neither is willing to say."

I hope that this site will serve as a happy little birdie for many!
